Circus in the city of light

I won the Minister prize in the Korea Textile Design Award.
The circus is one of the many pleasures we have access to in our daily lives.
These joyful experiences give us energy and joy.
If you translate Circus in the City of Light into Korean, it is directly translated as 빛의 도시 서커스.
Normally, architecture is mostly straight lines, but I want to bring the joy of the circus to European-style architecture and add fun to monotonous buildings by using colors that can bring circus-like joy.

Usually when we think of the circus, we think of fun, lightheartedness, and fantasy.
I was attracted to these things, which led me to design the motif.
The design keywords are fantastic, kistch, and playful.
I think the image of the city is very refined, cold, and created by adults.
I wanted to show a kitschy spin-off that could be shown from a child's perspective.
My pattern is based on a child's imagination of the City of Lights.

My pattern is a pattern that represents a child's imagination of a city of lights, where the buildings have square windows, the cars are flashing yellow lights, the reds, greens, and blues are sparkling, and then the purple and pink firecrackers go off one by one, and there's circus music playing, and there's a pivotal point where the colors start to move in rhythm with each other, like people doing stunts and spinning around, or the Ferris wheel going around.
We thought that the image of a city that was wild and wacky, but also very fun, could be curious, kitschy, and joyful.
That's how I came up with these colorways.

For the colorways, we went for a strong chromaticity spectrum from red to purple to light pink to match the kitschiness, with watercolor-style color accents.

Combining the practicality and glamor of glam utility, a 2023 trend, with the playful and kitschy elements of the circus, this design can showcase a persona's unique personality and create a trendy and original style that's all their own.

For this piece, I wanted to create an optical illusion.
When you look at the piece up close, you can see the carousel, the Ferris wheel, and the horse as individual objects, but when you look at it from a distance, the entire painting looks like a flower. The piece gives the viewer the opportunity to discover the details of each object up close, and when viewed from a distance, they merge into a beautiful unity.
